Blue Water & Me is a high-adventure story of Penn Wallace's magical first summer fishing with his father, Blue Water Charlie, at age eleven. The pair begin their adventure by ramming a thirty-thousand ton Japanese freighter. Charlie regales Penn with old-time fish stories. Penn swims with dolphins and explores desert islands. As the summer passes, Penn's undying belief in Charlie slowly erodes as he sees his father's feet of clay. Finally, they get caught in an out of season hurricane. They fight for their lives in hundred mile an hour winds and thirty foot waves. Blue Water & Me is a story of father-son bonding that every father and son, or anyone close to a father or a son, should read.

Blue Water and Me eBook Pendelton C Wallace

This is a collection of true sailing and fishing adventures of an eight-year-old boy and his father, a master seaman called "Blue Water" Charlie.

My first reaction to these stories was to be startled at the real danger the young author faced at sea. There were several points where I couldn't help but consider: if this little boy had indeed drowned, been crushed, or died in some other way... these stories would never have been written.

The writing is lean and honest. The prose doesn't get in the way, and reminded me of Hemingway (it's hard not to think of The Old Man and the Sea once or twice). Since surviving these sailing adventures as a boy, Wallace has obviously become an expert sailor himself, and his adult expertise adds vivid detail and authority to the text.

In the end, these are outstanding stories about fathers, sons, and sailing, and that should tell you if this is right for you.

Blue Water and Me eBook Pendelton C Wallace Reviews

Blue Water and Me is yarn spinning at its finest, and paraphrasing an old Belizean saying, 'If these tales ain't true, then they're nearly true.' Good story tellers keep their listeners attentive with humorous and/or exciting material and Penn has a full measure of these characteristics, but in addition, he informs as he entertains. We learn about the life of commercial fisherman in the mid nineteen hundreds, the ups and downs of the fishing industry and much about the sea itself. Most of this information is still pertinent today. It is an added bonus, after we reluctantly reach the last page, to feel a little smarter for having read the book. I recommend it to everyone who has a curiosity about the sea.

Chance Along A Wind Worth Waiting For
Penn Wallace is an excellent story teller. At a book signing I had heard him read an excerpt that left me on the edge of my seat, and had to read more. The book does not disappoint. This is especially a good read for anyone who has been to sea, but also for people who like their adventure to be vicarious! Even though I'm not into boating, he explained terminology as it came up, very simply, for people like me.
I loved Blue Water and Me - I'm not sure who the best storyteller is - the father who lived the tales, or the young son, who absorbed every word, and grew up to write the book of stories his father dreamed about. Tales of the sea, the salty dogs, fishing and family, and the complexity of keeping a boat afloat in a hurricane. What a rich adventure to have as a boy! Thanks for sharing these stories Mr. Wallace
Blue Water & Me
Penn has created a wonderful story, which took me back to my youth and fishing for salmon with my dad, uncle Fred, Lester, a family friend, and his son, Tom (a surrogate brother) along the Washington coast, Straights of Juan du Fuca and Puget Sound. The book and Author's Event we attended spawned great memories, including catching those whoppers; setting out at day break to catch the morning fish feeding frenzies; hiding under tarps as rain squalls beat use half to death; mechanical breakdowns; seeing the magic of the seas, including a hugh whale shark; meeting crusty old Scandinavian commercial fishermen with hearts of gold; beautiful sunsets; bonding with real men who were significant to me and models for a lifetime.

Its unfortunate these experiences are rarely available to young men today.

Thanks Penn for generating such memories.
Blue Water and Me is a moving memoir about the author Penn Wallace and his complex relationship with his Papa. His Papa, Blue Water Charlie, is looking for one last adventure before selling his fishing boat as he promised Mama he would do. Young Penn accompanies him as his deck hand earning 10 cents per fish. Throughout the summer Papa tells Penn stories from the glory days of fishing in the 40's. Penn learns how his Papa met his Mama, a young Mexican girl, and it was love at first sight. As the summer wanes on the adventures of Penn and his Papa are interspersed with Papa's stories of a bygone era. But, as Papa chases his dreams, he unwittingly puts his and his son's life in peril.

The book transports the reader to another time and place. The time is the early 60's and the place is the California fishing communities and off the California and Mexican coasts. Through Papa's stories, the reader is also transported back to the glory days of fishing in the early 40's. The father-son relationship is pivotal to the story as the young boy who worships his father discovers that he is a mere mortal. It is an enjoyable read which will delight any reader.
I enjoyed this book a great deal and would recommend it to anyone. It tells of a great adventure and love of a young boy and his father. During a summer, his father tells the boy about all of his experiences fishing with the interesting characters who make up the fishing fleet.
